In de huidige samenleving doet afwijkend gedrag ons ongemakkelijk voelen. Uitspraken over de ander zijn vaak gekoppeld aan veralgemeniseringen en vooroordelen. Wij stellen de norm en de ander zal zich hieraan moeten aanpassen.
In een iconische omgeving staat 'The Model', model voor authenticiteit. Het model is zichzelf, ongeacht wat anderen ervan denken.
'The Model' is een uitnodiging om zorgvuldiger te kijken. Het model laat ons achter met een dubbelzinnig gevoel. We worden meegezogen in de esthetiek en sereniteit van het beeld maar tegelijkertijd kan er een gevoel van ongemak opkomen door de kwetsbare opstelling van het model. De kijker wordt geconfronteerd met zijn eigen normatieve kijkgedrag en gedwongen om nauwkeurig te observeren. Want in hoeverre is waar we naar kijken echt confronterend? En is het moreel verdedigbaar om iemand met een mentale beperking zo neer te zetten of moeten we haar beschermen tegen haarzelf?

In our current society deviant behaviour makes us feel uncomfortable. Statements about the other are often linked to generalizations and prejudices. We define a standard that has to fit everybody.
In an iconic surrounding 'The Model' stands for authenticity. The model is herself, regardless of what others might think.
'The Model' is an invitation to look more carefully. The model leaves us with a sense of ambiguity. We are drawn to the aesthetics and serenity of the image but at the same time the vulnerable position of the model can make us feel uncomfortable. The viewer is faced with its own normative viewing habits and forced to watch more carefully. Because, is what we see truly confrontating? And is it morally defensible to portray someone with a mental disability like this or do we need to protect her?
